Over time, excessive alcohol use can lead to the development of chronic diseases, neurological impairments and social problems. These include but are not limited to: Cardiovascular problems, including myocardial infarction, cardiomyopathy, atrial fibrillation and hypertension.
1,400 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die each year from alcohol-related unintentional injuries, including motor vehicle crashes.
U.S. alcohol statistics and alcohol related statistics reveal that approximately 50,000 cases of alcohol overdose are reported each year, and roughly 52 times per year, once every week, someone needlessly loses his or her life due to this preventable condition. What is especially sad about alcohol related statistics such as these is that alcohol poisoning and alcohol overdose fatalities are 100% preventable.
Scientists have discovered that the strong cravings that are associated with alcohol addiction are located in the area of the brain that is located directly behind the forehead, called the orbitofrontal cortex; in brain imaging studies, this area lights up when a person is experiencing an extreme craving for alcohol.
