  • On one college campus that is located in the northern region of the United States, an informal survey indicated over 90% of first-year students had drunk to intoxication in the previous month.
  • If an alcohol dependent person suddenly withdraws (withdrawal means to stop drinking or using drugs) from alcohol, he or she may suffer delirium tremens. Without proper medical supervision severe delirium tremens could end in death.
  • Many alcoholics do not like to eat when they are drinking; this is generally because the less food that is in their body, the quicker that the alcohol can be absorbed into their bloodstream, and the stronger their intoxication levels will be--this is a good thing for an individual chasing a "better alcohol buzz".
  • Reducing underage drinking will require community-based efforts to monitor the activities of youth and decrease youth access to alcohol. Recent publications by the Surgeon General and the Institute of Medicine outlined many prevention strategies that will require actions on the national, state, and local levels, such as enforcement of minimum legal drinking age laws, national media campaigns targeting youth and adults, increasing alcohol excise taxes, reducing youth exposure to alcohol advertising, and development of comprehensive community-based programs. These efforts will require continued research and evaluation to determine their success and to improve their effectiveness.
