The consequences of alcohol misuse are serious-in many cases, life threatening. Heavy drinking can increase the risk for certain cancers, especially those of the liver, esophagus, throat, and larynx (voice box).
Excessive alcohol use has immediate effects that increase the risk of many harmful health conditions. These immediate effects are most often the result of binge drinking and include the following: Miscarriage and stillbirth among pregnant women, and a combination of physical and mental birth defects among children that last throughout life.
An estimated 60% of 18-to 24-year-old current drinkers who failed to complete high school had begun to drink before age 16.
Blood or urine biomarker tests cannot determine who has alcohol dependence, only whether a person has been drinking recently.
