  • The consequences of alcohol misuse are serious-in many cases, life threatening. Heavy drinking can increase the risk for certain cancers, especially those of the liver, esophagus, throat, and larynx (voice box).
  • Excessive alcohol use has immediate effects that increase the risk of many harmful health conditions. These immediate effects are most often the result of binge drinking and include the following: Miscarriage and stillbirth among pregnant women, and a combination of physical and mental birth defects among children that last throughout life.
  • An estimated 60% of 18-to 24-year-old current drinkers who failed to complete high school had begun to drink before age 16.
  • Blood or urine biomarker tests cannot determine who has alcohol dependence, only whether a person has been drinking recently.
