According to a current report from the U.S. Task Force on Community Preventive Services, there is little evidence that designated programs actually reduce the rate of drunk driving and alcohol-related crashes, as few designated drivers actually completely abstain from drinking. The report concluded that in a great many instances, the least-intoxicated person is chosen to be the driver, which defeats the purpose of the program.

Currently, nearly 14 million Americans-1 in every 13 adults-abuse alcohol or are alcoholic. Several million more adults engage in risky drinking that could lead to alcohol problems. These patterns include binge drinking and heavy drinking on a regular basis.
