- When a person drinks an excessive amount of alcohol in a very short period of time, it is often referred to as binge drinking; this type of drinking scenario is a common cause of alcohol poisoning.
- Alcohol intoxication impaired brain function resulting in poor judgment, reduced reaction time, loss of balance and motor skills, or slurred speech.
- Lack of parental support, monitoring, and communication has been significantly linked to frequency of drinking, heavy drinking, and drunkenness among adolescents.
- In addition to the age 21 MLDA (minimum legal drinking age), other effective strategies for preventing underage drinking include increasing alcohol excise taxes and limiting alcohol outlet density. Youth exposure to alcohol marketing should also be reduced.
